Introduction

Introduction
This is a general solution which should work for each Guild Guide and even for a single Maleficient. Of course some things could be optimized. But my goal was to provide a solution, that works for each Champion and also for the Maleficients.

Possible optimizations and alternatives might be mentioned where appropriate.
The aim of this guide is to explore as much as possible and to get as much Challenge points as possible.

The aim is definitely not to run through as fast as possible. Anyway – who wants to run fast through this fantastic game?
All notes are based on version WIP008.
Most game terms start with uppercase letters.
Spells will only be used after detection!
(I like my rock hard – Lee Aaron)
I'm not a native speaker, but this also has an advantage: people of my language should easily understand me...

Important Warning
Do not edit this page manually!!! I generate the complete page automatically from a private file. So anything you change will be lost after my next update.

In case you find something that should be changed/added, please let me know: either here or in the Dungeon Master forum (I'm Zan there also). Please let me know, whether I should mention your name as input source or whether you prefer to stay anonymously.

Please note, that this page is equivalent to release 0.1. It won't be updated here until I've found a way to reduce formatting overhead.

Formatting Notes
Some entries look like
<champion 1, champion 2, ...>: text
These are valid only for the mentioned champions / champion groups.
Some places are marked as "Important Place", so you can easily search for them in this document.
Some sections are backgrounded purple. These are heavy spoilers.

For example for the Black Pudding, there is first a section that simply says: "Kill the Rock Pile". This section is followed by a purple section giving you a trick how to do this very fast.

Some Notes

Some Rules for Beginners
Save often.
Open guild doors early.
Avoid climbing into unknown pits as long as you have other options.
Think twice before pressing a switch.
Don't waste keys on doors, unless you are sure you can't get behind it in another way.
Many doors can be opened by bashing, fireballs, door-opening spell, lockpicks or in special ways (e. g. stepping onto a certain square that is far far away...).
Save more often.
Avoid fighting in narrow corridors if possible. If you lure enemies into a room, you can try attacking them from behind (2x2 squares is sufficient).
If a monster is too strong – maybe it is intended not to kill it? Many monsters can also be circumvented.
You can also try to calm them away.
Fireball (aka Exploding Fire) is the best friend of the Maleficients. So is Fury...
Save even more often.

Items I often take with me in the early game when I have them
Scroll – The Challenge
Empty Flask
Lockpicks
Keys (Iron, Gold, Emerald; for checking doors for this guide...)
Compass
Rope
Fury (I love these extra Fireballs...)
Vorpal Blade
Long Lost Wand (Calming is great!)
Bone Doll (Maleficients only)
Waterskin
Food (about 1-2 Gorgonzolas or equivalent food)

A Note to Doors
I normally close doors behind me – except if I want a quick retreat back.
This keeps most enemies in a defined area. Of course some of them walk through doors anyway...
As an example let's take the door to the Wine Cellar in the beginning. When I go down here I normally let it open.
When I go up, I close it normally. So when I go down again, I can cast some light spells if necessary without being disturbed by Small Rats or even worse Gigglers or Leprechauns.

10 Questions
Did you know that...

...you can get the Rope in the Storage Cellar without climbing into those damned pits?
...there is a way you can climb down the pit east of the Rope and leave from there to the ladder to the Cellar without dropping all your belongings?
...you can take the Supplies for the Strong without a Branch and with a health of 1?
...there is a rather easy way to kill the Black Pudding without fighting?
...you can leave the Long Lost Wand's room with the Long Lost Wand and without using the Iron Key?
...you can recharge Fury with Wisdom less than 10? And why you shouldn't do that?
...there is a square where you can use the Clairvoyance spell and get the message "Voyeur"?
...you can spawn a Caterpillar in the Sewers?
...you can spawn a Xorn in the Sewers?
...there is a good reason why sometimes items seem to vanish when fighting the Gigglers in the Ninja Guild?

Special Notes Regarding the Champions

G4, M4

Keep in mind, that a group of 4 champions doesn't level up as fast as a single champion... (and it needs more food...)

Iaido

Be careful using the Shuriken. You really don't want it to vanish in a pit or behind a locked grate door in case you miss the enemy.

M*

Suicide and resurrection is not an option!

Prelude for the Maleficients – Some Considerations
(maybe interesting for other groups also)

Summary
We consider four important points here for the Maleficients:
1. Combat
2. Water
3. Branches
4. Mana
5. Light

These points might be of interest for other groups also...

Combat

Combat is hard for the Maleficients. Rats are easy, because they are silly enough to walk under doors immediately to follow you (and you can attack them from behind). But the Chewer Trees don't do this that quickly. This makes the fight rather long, which in turn often results in food shortage.

Avoid fighting Chewer Trees with the Maleficients too early!

Water

There are three Waterskins available (and 4 options to get them) in the early game:

1. One in the Chewers room in the Storage Cellar – although it is not a good one (you need to click half a day for drinking...).
2. One behind the Iron Key door to the right of the entrance to the Storage Cellar. You can bash this door (but Maleficients are to weak for this) or use an Iron Key.
3. One in the Cellar in the "Supplies for the Strong". For this one you need to be strong – which is no problem. Furthermore, you need a Branch – which is a problem that will be considered in the section "Branches" below.
4. You can get the last Waterskin also without a Branch and with low Health. It just needs a little more running around...

We want a good Waterskin – so only options 2-4 remain.

Option 1

In case it takes you too long to get the Waterskin (or if you have doubts about this) you can take the one in the Chewers room in between to survive. The Chewers there can be circumvented without fighting them (see option 2)!

Option 2

Maleficients use an Iron Key (or some SAR Wines...) while other Champions just bash the door.

To avoid being trapped by the Chewers, I recommend the following strategy for the Maleficients (other Champions of course can just kill them): if the Chewers are in their room you have enough time to take the Waterskin. If they are near the stairs, go up and down the stairs until they are on the right side (!). Now lure them into their room, where you can circumvent them. Then run to take the bag with the Waterskin and return up the stairs.

Thus you can gain the Waterskin – but you also activate a Chewer generator that generates another 4 Chewers in the Chewers room. This might make it difficult to get the Corbum behind the northern door later.

Option 3

The problem with Waterskin 3 is to get the necessary health to take the Supplies for the Strong (and you might be disturbed by Rats or Gigglers...). You can fight doors (which is quite boring) or Cave Rats in the Rat Lair (which is dangerous and time consuming). I have tested it both with doors and rats for most groups (especially also for M1) and always got the Supplies for the Strong and the Waterskin in time with a reserve of about 50% water left.

Option 4

You can re-open the door to the "Supplies for the Strong" if you take the Monk Staff of the "More Supplies for the Strong". My approach makes use of this fact. More on this later.

RESULT

I will use option 4 in this guide and take the Supplies of the Strong without worrying about a Branch! Yes, this is possible...

If you want to try out option 2, go to the Storage Cellar immediately after receiving the FUL spell! Then you can continue with the southern part of the Cellar and the Rat Lair.

If you prefer option 3, go down to the Sewers immediately after Aim 1 and get one as described in section "Branches". Then after receiving the FUL spell, go to the Rat Lair until you are strong enough for the Supplies for the Strong. Then you can continue with the southern part of the Cellar

Branches

You can find five Branches in the early game:
1. Kill the Chewer Trees in the Storage Cellar.
2. Down the foul smelling stairs to the Sewers in the eastern corner is one just lying around.
3. Or kill the Chewer Tree there.
4. Behind the Solid Key door in the north-eastern part of the Cellar.
5. One lies in the Supplies fo the Strong – great...

Since we don't want to fight Chewers, 1. and 3. are not an option (and of course 5. isn't also).

To get the 4th Branch means some running to get the Solid Key first – and lots of chances to meet rats, which means additional running... Good chances to run out of food or water...

So, what about the second? You can go down the foul smelling stairs to the Sewers. If you just run into the eastern corner, you might be trapped by the Chewer Tree there. So, lure the tree to the square south of the pit (while you are east of it). Now rush to the East and get the Branch. Rush back and up the stairs. This would be a good solution – but unfortunately, if the Chewer Tree has left his origin square it might block your way making this solution impossible.

This leads us to option 3 again. But wait – what if the Chewer Tree would already be dead? Yes, this is possible! Before champion selection do the path down the foul smelling stairs, where Gando gets his second Corbum. Make sure that you rush over the Chewer Tree (just as you rush over the Flame in front of the Maleficient Guild). After champion selection go down to the Sewers again as fast as possible. If you are fast enough, you can return here, before the tree respawns and easily take the Branch.
You might also find an additional Branch here from the earlier killed Chewer. And also a Chewer Pod if you are lucky.

Mana

The Maleficients start with 0 Mana. This is not a problem if you select all 4 Maleficients, since they can pray with the Bone Doll. But it is a problem if you select only one Maleficient. You need to equip him with mana spending items to gain Priest and Wizard experience. In the early game, you'll find a Monk Staff (+2 Mana) and a Moonstone (+3 Mana). This is sufficient to cast either the YA spell or the FUL spell in two steps.

Note: since praying does not consume Mana, you can additionally use the YA and/or FUL spell, to gain even more experience.

Light

Since the Maleficients can't carry much stuff, it is important to reduce the number of needed torches. So we need the light spell as soon as possible (remember: we don't use spells before detection to make things harder...). The spell can be found after the first door of the Wizard Guild, which can be opened with a Plasma found quite early.

Fireball

Fireball makes life much more easy. So we try to get this spell as early as possible. More on this later.

Summary

So, this is the plan for the beginning:
1. Before champion selection, go down "Gando's way" and step over the Chewer in the Sewers.
2. Resurrect/reincarnate champions.
3. Go down to the Sewers and take a Branch (only for option 3!)
4. Go to the Wine Cellar.
5. Kill the Giant Cave Rat (not mentioned before, but useful...).
6. Get the Monk Staff and the Moonstone.
7. Get the Plasma.
8. Open the first door to the Wizard Guild.
9. Get the light spell.
10. Then we care about water and food.

Aim 0 – "Before" Start (Ghost)
X X X X X X X X If you are planning to play with Zed or don't have a plan yet: step to the right to pray. This will give Zed an extra Monk Staff later.
Note: I do this always, just in case other effects are triggered – who knows?
X X X X X X X X Step onto the Black Flame in front of the Maleficient Guild to kill it.
X X X X X X X X If you are planning to play with Gando or don't have a plan yet: do "Gando's Way" down the foul smelling stairs through the Sewers: go in front of the "FOUL SMELLS..." stairs and go: 5xFront 3xRight 1xBack 10xFront 2xLeft 6xFront (fast!) Right Front Right 2xFront 3xLeft 1xBack 3xFront and you'll back to the starting point. This will give Gando an extra Corbum later.
Note: I also do this always, just in case other effects are triggered.
X X X X X X X X Important Note: do always "Gando's way"!
Make sure that you rush over the Chewer Tree in the Sewers – but do not kill it in the niche where it spawns. You might later find an additional Branch (and a Chewer Pod if you are lucky) here.

Finished / TBD

This section lists all open stuff that has been detected, but not yet been explored or done:
- stairs, ladders, teleporters, ... not yet used
- doors not yet opened
- corridors not yet used
- riddles not yet solved
- enemies not yet defeated
And so on.

"X" means: done (or not relevant)
"---" means: to be done.
If all groups have an "X", the entry is removed next time.

Aim 1 – The Guilds – Champion Selection
X X X X X --- --- --- Reincarnate champion(s).
--- --- --- --- --- X X X Resurrect champion(s).
--- --- --- --- --- --- X --- Kill 3 champions by running against walls.

Aim 2 – Character Equipment
--- --- --- --- --- X X X M*: don't forget to take the stuff that appears in the alcove oppposite of the Maleficient Guild.

M4, M4-1: Use the Bone Doll for praying from time to time.
X X X X X X X X Gather the rocks and torches where you fell down. One of the torches is burnt out but the other is the best one in the beginning (and there is use for burnt out torches also...). Even the boulders can be useful...
--- --- --- --- --- X X --- Gain experience.
M4, M4-1: Go down the foul smelling stairs and the next one and pray once.
X X X X X X X X Take the start equipment in the Guilds – especially the Challenge Scroll.
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- Behind the doorway to the Guilds is an inscription "To the Room of Fate" and a button. Pressing the button teleports you there (save game before doing this). In the Room of Fate you can train to deal with Gigglers. Don't waste too much time with them – you get almost no experience points here (1 XP per spell and hit) but lose food and water. This is only helpful if you are completely new to the game and don't know what Gigglers do... Best reload afterwards.

Furthermore, you can also make your life harder here...

I don't press this button.
--- --- --- --- --- X X X M*: Take only absolutely necessary stuff with you, because of your low stamina. And the stamina decreases when you just walk even if you don't carry any load...

So, I normally take only one torch for light, later also one torch for closing Pit D and the Bone Doll for praying (and the Challenge – just to make sure that I don't forget it...).
X X X X X X X X Create your camp here. Put unimportant stuff onto the ground and important stuff into the Alcove where you found the Challenge. When opening Guild doors, you will get more alcoves to store and sort important stuff.

Aim 4 – The Wine Cellar

Summary
Kill the Giant Cave Rat to find a Mace.
Kill the small rats if you encounter them.
Open a passage to the Cellar.
We also go here to find just a useless scroll...

Note: we don't waste time searching for Iron Key or ZO Liqueur (torches don't burn forever – at least most of them...). We'll take them later.

Aim 4 A – The Cave Rat
X X X X X X --- --- Take a burnt out torch with you.
M4-1, M1: we have to return to the Guilds in between to reduce load... We'll take it with us later.
X X X X X X X X Go down the stairs to the Wine Cellar.
--- --- --- --- --- X X --- M4, M4-1: pray once.
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- Note: in case you encounter rats, lure them to the entrance door and let it help you – even the small rats can kill you with one hit.
X X X X X X X X Go and find the Cave Rat. Kill it (the entrance door is your friend...). You'll find a Mace.
M*: "damned – the Mace is heavy..."

Aim 4 B – Find the Passage to the Cellar
X X X X X X X X Take the two torches next to the entrance door if you want them.
X X X X X X X X Take the bag with the inventory scroll in the left corner. You will need zillions of bags... Look into it later at a safe place and you'll find a Scroll.

Note: this Scroll is not counted for the unimportant scrolls in the statistics since we will sacrifice it soon.
X X --- --- --- --- X X Return to the Guilds to clean the inventory.
--- --- --- --- --- --- X X Take a burned out torch with you.
X X --- --- --- --- --- --- Use a Mace to open the first door of the Fighter Guild.
X X --- --- --- --- --- --- Bash the second one. Strength 49 can be sufficient.
Note: your bashing is better if your stamina is high!
X X --- --- --- --- --- --- Use a Mace to open the third door of the Fighter Guild.
X X --- --- --- --- --- --- Take the Sword and the Leather Armour.

Aim 5 – The Cellar 1 – The Northern Part

Summary
We do only the absolutely necessary for now: getting the Plasma and the Moonstone (for Mana). On our way we also explore the Northern part of the Cellar.and collect some food there.

Be prepared to meet Gigglers, Leprechauns and/or Rats.
X X X X X X X X Enter the Cellar.
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- Note: a good way to get rid of rats is Pit D (but keep in mind they also provide steaks!)... But be careful about Gigglers. You really don't want a Giggler, that has stolen items from you, to fall into this pit...
X X X X X X X X Go two times right. You'll see the Supplies for the Strong. Step into the doorway and step back immediately. The door closes.
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- Note:
The door to the Supplies for the Strong can be opened again when you take the Monk Staff of the "More Supplies for the Strong" later. You can even get the Supplies for the Strong quite easily without a Branch and with low health if you do the following:
1. Step into the door and step back immediately. The door closes.
2. Do the path to the Long Lost Wand to gain access to "More Supplies for the Strong" and take them. Put the Monk Staff back into the alcove.
3. Return to the Supplies for the Strong. The door is now open. Take items. After taking the Scimitar, step back.
4. Go east two more steps and from there follow the Long Lost Wand path to "More Supplies for the Strong".
5. Take the Monk Staff. This opens the door again.
6. Return to the Supplies for the Strong. Take the Shuriken. The door stays open now.

Thus you can take everything here without a Branch and with Health 1!
X X X X X X X X Go to the North to the Fountain of Wisdom and take the map to the Long Lost Wand. Check for rats, before entering the dead end here, so that they don't trap you.
X X X X X X X X Go to the north-eastern corner of the Cellar. From where you found the the Monk Staff there are two ways: either just 12 squares east and then 13 squares north, or along the ladder to the Temple. I prefer the second one, because there seem to be less monsters there (and because of Gorgonzolas – see below).
X X X X X X X X I go down the ladder. Nothing special here. But a good place for resting, taking the Scroll out of the bag, putting other stuff into it, praying and savegame.
M4, M4-1: pray once.
X X X one only X X X X On your way don't forget the Gorgonzolas in the north-western part. Hopefully the rats have not yet detected them... Be careful when going there – it's a quite long dead end.
Note: "---" means: the Rats (or Gigglers) were faster...
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- A Boulder is also lying around – seems to have no further meaning. You cannot even kill the Rat with it – at least not now.
X X X X X X X X On your way you also can find a Stone Mushroom and two Spitter Berries.
--- X --- --- --- --- --- --- Encountered a Giggler which dropped a Gold Key.
--- X --- --- --- --- --- --- Encountered a Giggler which dropped a Silver Coin.
--- --- --- X --- --- --- --- Encountered a Giggler which dropped a Silver Coin and a Gorgonzola.
X X X X X X X X Open the door to the Fountain of Ignorance. Feed it with a scroll (I use the one found in the Cellar) to open the Door of Answers.
X X X X X X X X Go to the West and close Pit D.
X X X X X X X X Go to the Door of Answers and take the Plasma, the Shining and the SAR coin.
X X X X X X X X Near Pit D take the Moonstone and the Blast Spore. Leave something (burnt out torch, rock, ...) to close Pit D again. The Moonstone provides 3 Mana, which is important for Leif and very important for M1.
X X X X X X X X Go east then south. You pass a pressure plate and an inscription to the wall. On the pressure plate, you here a grate door moving. This is the starting point for the path to the Long Lost Wand. Remember it.
X X X X X X X X When you reach the pit, turn right and return to the Guilds.

Aim 6 – The Guilds – The FUL Spell

Summary
Open Guild door(s).
Gain the FUL spell.
X X X X X X X X Use the Plasma to open the first door of the Wizard Guild. The Plasma does not work for later Wizard doors.
X X X X X X X X In the bookshelf there you find your first Wizard spell (FUL).
X X X X X X X X Congratulations: you are now able to cast a spell for light and no longer need torches. Cast this spell from time to time to gain Wizard exerience.
--- --- --- --- --- X X --- M4, M4-1: Go down the foul smelling stairs and the next one and pray once.
X X --- --- --- --- --- X Leif: since Leif has not enough mana for this spell, you should equip him with the Moonstone at least until he gets his first Wizard level.
M1: equipping Monk Staff and Moonstone to him lets him cast the FUL spell in two steps.
X --- --- --- X --- --- --- Use a Corbum to open the second door of the Wizard Guild.
X --- --- --- X --- --- --- Use a Corbum to open the third door of the Wizard Guild.
((X)) X X ((X)) X X X --- Use a Monk Staff to open the first door of the Priest Guild.
((X)) X X ((X)) X X X --- Take the Bag.
X --- --- X --- --- --- --- Use a Monk Staff to open the second door of the Priest Guild.
X --- --- X --- --- --- --- Take the YA Scroll from the bookshelf.

Aim 7 – The Cellar 2 – More Supplies for the Strong
X X X X X X X X Return to the Cellar. Go south until you are east of the Supplies for the Strong. Go east and follow the rest of the path to the Long Lost Wand.

In fact, I would only climb down into unknown pits, if no other option is left. As long as there are stairs or ladders, where I can (hopefully...) easily go back, I prefer these.

Do not use this Blast Spore. We have a special use for it later...
X X X X X X X X Go back to the Supplies for the Strong. Take everything including the Scimitar. Furthermore, you find a Full Waterskin, some food, a Shining Necklace and other stuff. After taking the Scimitar step back immediately.

Aim 9 – The Rat Lair 1

Summary
Kill rats until the doctor comes for Fur Rags, food and experience and also to get strong enough to take the Supplies for the Strong.
Get a VEN Egg.
Since we are going to meet a tough guy soon (the Minotaur) experience is also welcome... Kill Rats until you are Apprentice Fighter and Ninja.

Notes:
1. The Rat Generator is on the square mentioned in the map description. But it is activated elsewhere...
2. The Rats respawn quite fast first. But see important note below.

Rat Lair – Important Note

The time will come, when it looks as if no more Rats respawn. But this is not true!
As I see it, after a certain number of Rats have spawned, the respawn timer is increased to an incredible huge amount. Maybe one rat per hour or something like that.

Other people reported that they get unlimited Rats fast. So there seems to exist some mechanism that deals somehow with the respawn timer. I don't know what it is and would recommend not relying on unlimited Rats. There is enough other food there, btw.

X X X X X X X X Take with you one or better two bags. You will find lots of stuff.
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- Take with you rat poison. Oh wait, we don't have rat poison... Damned, that might get hard...
X X X X X X X X Return to the cellar, then go first to the East and then to the South.
X X X X X X X X Before entering the Rat Lair, go to the East and take the Steak.
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- Enter the Rat Lair. Before dealing with the rats think about collecting the 4 Gorgonzolas, the VEN Egg and the Bones (M* should think about this twice...). I recommend a counter-clockwise round for this. You should be fast – otherwise you might get trapped between two rats. Then await the rats at the northern entrance to the rat lair, where you easily can maneuver them out.

I take normally only the first Gorgonzola now and the rest later after gaining some experience (hoping everything is still there...).
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- If you need a place to rest you might go down the stairs near the pit to the Long Lost Wand. You might also increase your Priest and Wizard experience there.
X --- --- X X --- X X First Gorgonzola taken ("---" means, the rats were faster...).
X X X X X X X X Kill some rats for food and experience until you are Apprentice Fighter and Ninja (exception G4, M4: Novice Fighter and Ninja).
Note: check for diseases before saving!
X X X X X X X X Bones taken
X --- --- X --- X X X Second Gorgonzola taken.

Interlude – The Flask

Now that we have Light, Food, Water and Mana, our next big goal is getting a Flask, so that we can produce potions for Health and Stamina regeneration. For this, we need to go to the Treasure Area – but before we have to deal with the Minotaur...

Interlude – The Fireball Spell

This spell will make life much easier for the Maleficients. Since it is hidden in the Wizard Guild, we need some more Corbums to unlock guild doors. One of them can be found in the Treasure Area.

Interlude – Guild Items

6 Guild Items can be found in the Treasure Area. So this is where we should go next.

Interlude for the Maleficients – Some Considerations
(maybe interesting for other groups also)

The Maleficients still fight incredibly bad. So now it's time to think how to proceed.

As the Maleficients still refuse to fight Chewer Trees, I defer the Storage Cellar.

My next aim normally would be the Treasure Area as mentioned above. Unfortunately, before we get there, there is the Minotaur's Maze. Though the Minotaur can be defeated by normal champions, I doubt, that my Maleficients can do it – at least not in a fair fight... Of course, they will try it – but we need a plan B here...

OK... There are two ways into the Minotaur's Maze, which we will examine in the next sections.

Way 1: the ladder in the Rat Lair

You can go up here but will have a rather long way through the maze. Also, there is no way to bypass the Minotaur here – except if the beast is silly enough to walk into one of the dead ends. I wouldn't rely on that.

Way 2: the Solid Key door in the Northeast of the Cellar

Going through the Solid Key door and farther to the East you will find a stairs up to the MIPS area. There are Chewer Trees here, but they can be circumvented if necessary. From the passage from the MIPS area to the Maze it is only a few steps to the end of the Maze.

Chances are about 50%, that the Minotaur is here. In this case, it blocks the passage and doesn't go away!

The Minotaur doesn't enter the MIPS area so you can slowly tear it down.

OK, after some more thinking I decide to use Way 2 for all champion groups for the following reasons:

1. I don't like having enemies in my back – at least not living ones.
2. We can get a Sapphire in the MIPS area, which we can use a little later.
3. Last not least: the Minotaur has a Mace...

This way is quite easy even for the Maleficients. So, if the Minotaur is not at the MIPS entrance door, I will search it and lure it there and fight it anyway.

Aim 10 – The Cellar 4 – The Way to the MIPS Area
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- M*: if you want to fight the Rock Monster, take enough food with you. The Rock monster is quite hard (but there is also an easy solution) ...
I suggest about 5-7 Gorgonzolas or 3-5 Steaks per Champion...
X X X X X X X X Take the Solid Key with you.
X X X X X X X X Take the Zo Liqueur and the VEN Egg with you.
--- --- X X X --- --- --- Go to the Wine Cellar and fill up SAR Wines to 3 again.
--- --- --- --- --- X X X Go to the Wine Cellar and fill up SAR Wines to 16 again.
X X X X X X X X Enter the Cellar and go straight to the East as fast as possible. Take the Scroll in the alcove and place the ZO Liqueur and the VEN Egg there.
--- --- --- --- --- X X X Deposit the SAR Wines in one of the alcoves near Pit D to reduce load.
X X X X X X X X Go to the Solid Key door in the Northeast of the Cellar and open it.
X X X X X X X X Go to the East.
X X X X X --- --- --- Kill the Chewer Trees.
--- --- --- --- --- X X X Circumvent the Chewer Trees.
X X X X X X X X Go up the stairs.

Aim 11 – The MIPS Area 1 – Get a Sapphire

Summary
We use the MIPS area only as a passage to the Minotaur's Maze for now – and also to take a Sapphire.
We'll come back later to solve the riddle. We don't have the right spell yet, and the Maleficients most probably will be too weak anyway.
X X X X X X X X After you have seen the inscription "Pay for Safety" open the next door to the left, go in and wait a little...
If you turn to the North while standing in the doorway, you can see a Scroll and a Key in an alcove. Keep this in mind for later.
X X X X X X X X Continue to the South until you see two doors. In front of the right door is a Rock Pile.
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- If you want to fight it, bash the door first. Otherwise many kinds of damage go against the door instead of the Rock Pile (e. g. Ninja's Kick). If you are too weak: there is a switch nearby to open the door...
X X X X X tbd X X Now kill the Rock Pile (I use the pit trick desribed below!) and gather its treasures – Emerald, Sapphire and more.
M4: was not able to do the pit trick, so deferred this to later...
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- Black Pudding Strategy Hint

Instead of fighting, you can also defeat the Rock Pile as follows:

Open the door vis-à-vis the Rock Pile and stand in its archway. The Rock Pile throws 2-20 Rocks against you but can't hit you with them. Finally it steps one step forward. Now step back into the pit behind you. You fall into a teleporter which teleports you onto the Rock Pile's square killing it easily.

If you don't have enough health to survive falling into the pit just continue and come back here after cleaning the Minotaur's Maze – or when you have gained access to the Treasure Area and killed some Chewers there.

G4, M4: the Rock Pile throws its rocks farther if you have a full group! They can hurt you! Always the right front Champion gets damage. So rotate them. If you get too much damage from rocks, step forwar and left or right, heal, then stand in the doorway again. This was no problem for G4. But M4 being just Novice Fighters and Ninjas couldn't all survive pit falls.
X X X X X X X X Next go into the passage to the West and take the Sling.
X X X X X tbd X X I pressed also the button to open the Black Pudding's door and went into its room.
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- Do not yet open the Emerald door. You don't have the spell, that is needed later (at least not "officially"). Keep it in mind (or on your list).
X X X X X X X X Going south you see a destroyed door... If you come from the other side you can destroy the door with a fireball (most probably you must be a Journeyman Wizard to do this).
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- X Encountered a Giggler which dropped an Iron Key.
X X X X X X X X Search the Minotaur, lure it to the destroyed door, kill it and take its Mace.
X X X X X X X X Go through the destroyed door and then to the East.
X X X X X X X X Follow the path until you see a Bag and a ladder. Take the Bag – it contains your second VEN Egg and other stuff.
X X X X X X X X Climb down the ladder. It leads you to the Rat Lair again...
--- --- --- --- --- X --- --- Kill Rats until you are Apprentice Fighter and Ninja (for Black Pudding).
X X X X X X X X Return to the Guilds and clean inventory.
((X)) ((X)) X X X X X X Use a Mace to open the third door of the Fighter Guild.
((X)) ((X)) X X X X X X Take the Sword and the Leather Armour.
X X X X X --- X X Take the Sapphire with you.

Aim 12 – The Minotaur's Maze 1

Summary
Nothing more special to do – just clean from enemies.

Aim 13 – The Treasure Area 1 – The Teleporter Rooms

Summary
Solve the riddle to gain access to the Treasure Area.
We do only the most urgent stuff for now:
- take KATH Vinegars
- find the hidden stairs to Pit D in the Cellar
X X X X X X X X Solve the riddle to gain access to the Treasure Area (the fountain gives a hint...).

Note:
I'm not sure about the preconditions for the second stone-throw. All of my groups except M4 had a Journeyman Ninja and succeeded quite fast. M4 had only Apprentices and I did many many throws without success. Trying to get more strength or dexterity with SAR Wines for Apprentices did also NOT help. After some training for Journeyman Ninja, M4 also succeeded quite fast. Journeyman Fighter worked also quite fast. So my conclusion is: the thrower must be either Journeyman Fighter or Ninja.

So I went back to the Rat Lair and killed some Rats with M4. Unfortunately, I reached the Rat limit quite fast after killing 3-4 Rats. So went for killing a small rat and this made one of my Champions a Jourmeyman Ninja. And yes, the eightth throw was successful now!

Note: I later tested with Iaido. He was successful as an Apprentice Ninja! Strange...
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- Hint: Riddle Solution

1. Stand in front of the pit and throw a small item through the grate door in the North to remove a wall.
2. Stand between the pits and throw a small item into the eastern teleporter. It is deflected to the left and removes a second wall.
3. Stand in front of the second pit (where you removed the first wall) and throw a small item to the North when the teleporter is off (best when it just vanished)! This removes a third wall.
4. Step onto the pressure plate in the teleporter in front of the third pit and throw a small item into the northern teleporter. This closes the pit.

You might need several attempts sometimes.
X X X X X X X X Press the small button near the grate door to remove another wall in the Northeast.
X X X X X X X X When entering don't forget to take a look at the clothes in the alcove on the eastern side.
X X X X X X X X When entering the crossing in the North, where Chewer Trees appear in front of you, go through the door in the West. Close the door behind you. Yes – thousands of KATH Vinegars wait here for you.

Note
Do not waste time fighting the Chewers now, since new Gigglers might arrive soon again and take stuff lying around.
X X X X X X X X Take everything lying around in the room. Don't overlook the scroll. Don't step onto the green square while collecting – it's a teleporter.
X X X X X X X X Find the hidden stairs to the Cellar.
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- Hint: Gaining Access to the Stairs to the Cellar

You can distinguish both rooms easiest by the torch lying in the southern room (or putting down something unimportant yourself.

1. In the southern teleporter room go to the West, then south. The wall in front of you is illusionary. Step in. Touch the fountain. This removes a wall in the northern teleporter room.
2. Step onto the teleporter (green square) to teleport into the northern room.
3. Now you have to get into the niche two steps north. Unfortunately, the square north of you is a leleporter. But it is not always switched on. I don't know, when it switches on/off but got the iimpression chances are best, when the door near is open. But I succeeded also sometimes when the door was closed or moving.
4. If you have reached the niche, after 5 seconds another wall vanishes next to you and you can go down the stairs.

Instead of going into the nich in step 3, just throwing something there (e. g. the Robe that is lying around) works also. But it does not help you if you want to go through the moving door.
X X X X X X X X Go down the stairs to the alcoves near Pit D.
X X X X X X X X Store the torch in the Alcoves there.

Aim 14 – The Cellar 5 – The Flask

Summary
We get our first Flask and the first point for the Challenge.
X X X X X X X X From Pit D go to the East and to the South. In front of the pit turn left and go the alcove. Put a KATH Vinegar there and get a Flask (in another alcove nearby). A Mushroom is also there.

Yes – getting the first Flask was much easier in Dungeon Master...
X X X X X X X X And don't forget, to take back the used components again! You can do this before taking the flask, if you want.
X X X X X X X X Return to the Guilds.
((X)) X ((X)) X X X X X Use the Shuriken to open the second door of the Ninja Guild.
X --- X --- --- --- --- --- Use the Shuriken to open the third door of the Ninja Guild.
X --- X --- --- --- --- --- Touch the hand on the wall.

Aim 15 – The Treasure Area 2 – The Teleporter Rooms Revisited

Summary
Take remaining items in the teleporter rooms.
Gain access to the Tailor's Gifts.
X X X X X X X X Return to Pit D.
--- --- --- --- --- X X X Take the SAR Wines you stored in the alcoves there.
X X X X X X X X Go up the stairs to the Treasure Area again.
X X X X X X X X Take the stuff in the northern teleporter room.
X X X X X X X X Teleport to the southern room and leave it through the door.

Aim 16 – The Treasure Area 3 – The Statue

Summary
Find a way to the Statue.
X X X X X X X X If you face Chewer Trees here, kill them. If you are to weak for fighting you can lure them to a teleporter destination square and then teleport onto them. They will not be amused...
X X X X X X X X Try to bash the door on the left side.
Strength 50 seems to be sufficient. Drink SAR Wines if you need more strength.
X X X X X X X X Behind the door a statue awaits you. You can examine it, but it has not much to say... So, destroy it!
X X X X X X X X Grab into the Gem lock behind the statue and you are bitten by a poisonous snake. No, this was just a joke... You find a Mace!
X X X X X X X X Place the Sapphire into the Gem lock and you additionally receive a Corbum.
X X X X X X X X Leave the room.
X X X X X X X X Return to the Guilds.
((X)) X X X ((X)) X X X Use a Corbum to open the second door of the Wizard Guild.

Aim 17 – The Storage Cellar 1 – The Third Corbum

Summary
Get the third Corbum.
Get another unimportant Scroll.
X X X X X X X X Take with you the Blast Spore found at "More Supplies for the Strong".
X X X X X X X X Take with you an Iron Key.
X X X X X X X X Go down the stairs to the Storage Cellar and open the door.
X X X X X --- --- --- Search the Chewer Trees (normally they are in the room to the left). Kill them.
--- --- --- --- --- X X X M*: Circumvent the Chewer Trees. Do not fight them – it still takes very long.

If the Chewer Trees are standing in your way north of the stairs lure them to the right side of the stairs. Eventually you have to go up and down the stairs some times until they are to your right. You can also lure them into their room and circumvent them there without fighting. Eventually you have to repeat this several times, to get everything you want here.
X X X X X X X X Go to the Gold Key door in the North.
X X X X X X X X Use the Blast Spore from "More Supplies for the Strong" to blast a big hole into it.
X X X X X X X X Don't forget to take the ashes of the door.
X X X X X X X X You find here among others: a Corbum, a Gold Key and a Crossbow.
X X X X X X X X Go down the stairs. You see another Gold Key door. Return to the Storage Cellar.
X X X X X X X X Go into the Chewers room.
X X X X X X X X Take the Waterskin in the Chewer room if you want (although you shouldn't need it).
X X X X X X X X Take the Scroll also – you'll need it soon...
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- Touching the fountain here summons more Chewers. Good training stuff (and food)! But weak champions should be cautious: the Chewers might appear on the square just behind you blocking your escape if things go bad.

Hmm – not sure how this works. There seems to be a cooldown on using the fountain – not always when I click it, Chewers appear.

M*: Even worse: I doubt, whether I really earn more food than I consume during these fights. So it looks like the Rat Lair is the better option: one Rat – one Steak! Sounds good, doesn't it? Unfortunately, the Rats seem to be limited...

Anyway, it's still too early to try this out.
X X X X X X X X Take the torch, if you want.
X X X X X X X X Open the Iron Key door vis-à-vis the entrance door. You'll find another bag there. You will need zillions of bags... Did I mention this already?
X X X X X --- --- --- Next bash the door south of the entrance door (it's easier with high Stamina, so maybe sleep before!)... A strength of 39 is sufficient.

M*: note
Do not open the Iron Key door to the Waterskin until you have killed the Chewers. If you take the Bag with the Waterskin, you would run over a square that generates another Chewer group. You dont want to have two Chewer groups running around here...
X X X X X --- --- --- You'll find a Rock and a Bag with an Empty Waterskin. Yes, another bag...
X X X X X X X X Return to the Guilds.

Aim 18 – The Guilds – The Fireball Spell

Summary
Get the third Corbum.
Get another unimportant Scroll.
((X)) X X X ((X)) X X X Use the Corbum to open the third door of the Wizard Guild.
X X X X X X X X Solve the Wizard Guild riddle: place ten scrolls in the right-hand-side frame at eye level.
X X X X X X X X Take the Bag with the Mage Caduceus. This staff can cast Lightning and Window.
X X X X X X X X Go to the left, then turn left. Take the Scroll out of the bookshelf there. It tells about a Philosophal Stone. We'll add this to our TO DO list.
X X X X X X X X Turn around. Here you find the Alchemical Oven – including 3 instruction scrolls. Use it once before opening each further door.

First usage: Kath Vinegar + Zo Liqueur = Corbum

Note:
If you have already a fourth Corbum, you might try another choice depending on your play style.
X X X X X X X X Use a Corbum to open the fourth door of the Wizard Guild.
X X X X X X X X In the next alcove to your left you can unlock the Fireball Spell.
X X X X X X X X In the bookshelf to your right is a reminder for your next oven usage.
X X X X X X X X Go back to the Alchemical Oven and use it the second time.

Second usage: Kath Vinegar + Sar Wine = Zo Liqueur
X --- --- --- X --- --- --- Use a Corbum to open the fifth door of the Wizard Guild.

Aim 20 – The Treasure Area 5 – The Southeastern Part

Summary
Explore the southern path to the East and solve a hard riddle.
X X X X X X X X Return to the southern teleporter room and go through the door.
X X X X X X X X Note: kill any Chewer Trees you meet in this section for food – at least as long as you get experience for them.
X X X X X X X X Pick up a Branch and go to the East. Beware of new Chewer Trees when you enter the next crossing.
X X X X X X X X In the corner, you can see the inscription "TARRY NOT AT THE NARROW WAY TO WISDOM". Looking ot the South you see a bag. You want it... Step forward, take the bag and step back immediately.
X X X X X X X X Note: there are more treasures in the South: this level's main treasure and also another shuriken. Good luck...
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- Hint: The Narrow Way to Wisdom

There are two tasks to fulfill here: a bag on the next square and the main treasure.

A. Bag with Monk Staff
Quickly enter the next square in the South, grab the bag and quickly go back again (don't turn around!).

B. "Lucky Stones"
1. In the corner turn to the West.
2. Disribute load (or drop something on the ground), so that everybody has yellow load.
3. Take a trash item (Branch etc.) in the "cursor" hand.
4. Go two steps left as fast as possible.
5. Drop the item into the alcove.
6. Go two steps left and one step back as fast as possible.
7. Look around and take what you want.
8. If you are to weak to go back the Narrow Way to Wisdom with the Lucky Stones (M* ...) you can put them on the northern side of the "pit square". Then hurry back to the starting corner. Soon after you arrive there, the Lucky Stones are teleported to the square where you found the Monk Staff and you can take them easily.

Note 1: in case you are not able to fight the Chewers, you can lure them to the South. They will fall into the Pit even if you closed it before. Do this before dealing with the Lucky Stones.

Note 2: Opposite of the alcove is an inscription. If you want to read it, turn to the East in the starting corner. Then go two steps right fast, read it and go back fast. Or just read it on your way back...
X X X X X X X X Bag with Lucky Stones taken. I would strongly recommend, not to throw it...
X X X X X X X X Other treasure taken (Shuriken and others).
--- --- --- --- --- --- X X M4-1, M4: store the Lucky Stones in the alcove near Pit D in the Cellar.
X X X X X X X X Return to the Guilds.
((X)) X X ((X)) X X X X Use the Monk Staff to open the third door of the Priest Guild.
((X)) X ((X)) X X X X X Use the Shuriken to open the fourth door of the Ninja Guild.
((X)) X ((X)) X X X X X Take the Bag there.
--- --- --- --- --- X X X M*: Equip the Elven Boots for more load capacity.
--- --- --- --- --- --- X X M4-1, M4: return to Pit D and take the Lucky Stones and carry them to the Guilds.
X --- X --- --- --- --- --- Use the Shuriken to open the fifth door of the Ninja Guild.
X --- X --- --- --- --- --- Fight the Gigglers (see below for strategy) to gain a Gold Key and a Magic Purse with an Iron Key.
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- Strategy Hint: Fighting the Ninja Guild Gigglers

If you open the Leadership Gateway, you see 4 Gigglers. As soon as you enter the Leadership Gateway square, 4 additional Gigglers spawn behind you (you can verify this, if you enter the Leadership Gateway backwards!). When these additional Gigglers have stolen something from you, they flee. And on the square in front of the pit they teleport away – with the stolen items! So be cautious!

In my first games, I was dealing with the first 4 Gigglers and didn't notice the Gigglers behind me, because after stealing something they vanished before I killed the other ones. So I thought it was a bug, when I could not find all stolen items after killing the first group. But, it isn't!
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- So, this is what I would recommend:

1. Drop all items except a Shuriken in the riddle alcove near the pit.
2. Open the Leadership Gateway with the Shuriken and turn right.
3. Fight the 4 Gigglers behind the Leadership Gateway (if you enter the Leadership Gateway during the fight, you can turn around quickly to see the additional Gigglers).
4. If you have not yet entered the Leadership Gateway during the fight, do it now and the additional Gigglers appear.
5. Do not yet take the dropped items – so that they can't be stolen!
6. Fight the Gigglers or chase them into the teleporter. They drop nothing, so you can let them escape.
7. Go back and take the Magic Purse and the Gold Key.
8. Get back your stuff from the alcove.

Man, that was hard to find out...

Interlude – Guild Riddles

Now that we have explored most parts of the first two levels it's a good time to think how to proceed.

To not waste too much XP, you have to open further Guild doors soon. Therefore the Fighter and Priest Guild Riddles should be solved next. The Priest Guild Riddle is quite easy, but for the Fighter Guild Riddle you have to go deeper. I'd recommend to visit the Fur Trader since here you can also trade surplus Fur Rags into Steaks. The Dwarven Forge requires a lot of fighting in the Sewers to get a necessary item before and more fighting to get into the Dwarven Forge. Most probably you will waste Fighter and/or Ninja XP here.

So, let's see where we have to go for the Fur Trader:

1. Rat Lair – we need Fur Rags
2. Storage Cellar – get a Rope ( helpful for 3 and 6)
3. The Sewers (via the foul smelling stairs) – get the Flamebain – (helpful for 4 – the cook here cooks with fireballs...)
4. Food Storage – get 3 VEN Eggs (needed for 5)
5. Priest Guild – solve riddle to gain a wand (helpful for 6)
6. Temple (via the pit near "More Supplies for the Strong") – get the Long Lost Wand (helpful to clear the way to the Fur Trader Elevator)

Aim 21 – The Rat Lair 2

Summary
Kill more rats for Fur Rags, food and experience.
--- X X X X --- X X Go to the Rat Lair and kill Rats until you have 15 Fur Rags.
--- X X X X --- X X Return to the Guilds.

Aim 22 – The Storage Cellar 2 – The Rope

Summary
What we need next are VEN Eggs. They can be found in the Food Storages. The cook there cooks with fireballs, so we want some fire-protection. And for the fire-protection we need a rope... So now is the time to go to the Storage Cellar and explore it further.

Fight the Chewer Trees.
Find a Rope...
Find another way into the Cellar.
X X X X X X X X Return to the Storage Cellar.
((X)) ((X)) ((X)) ((X)) ((X)) X X X M*: Kill the Chewers – still hard but possible...
X X X X X X X X Enter the eastern corridor.
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- Behind the Iron Key door you can find a bow and some arrows. If you have a surplus Iron Key and love to search for arrows that missed the enemy after a fight, especially those ones, that vanished behind locked grate doors, you might take it. I don't!
X X X X X X X X To your right you see a button operated door. Press the button, enter the room and clean it from Chewers.
Note: be careful during this fight. If you enter the square with the rope, the rope will vanish...
X X X X X X X X In this room you see a rope...

To get it, you must be really, really fast. No – you must even be faster... Position the mouse, before entering the square (turning right to the wall and dropping a branch there might help for positioning – this trick might help also in other situations). Whether you got the rope or not, now behind you opened a pit. If you missed the rope, reload the game. You saved the game before trying that, didn't you?

And there is an easy way out without jumping into those damned pits... Ever thought why there is a pressure plate in front of the entrance door to this room...

Since you don't need the rope yet (you can just jump into pits also), you can leave it, where it is for now! You can later lure a Giggler here. If you manage him to enter the square, he will take the rope. If you kill him later elsewhere, he will drop the rope there and you can take it.

Note: If you climb down the eastern pit now, you can leave from there to the ladder to the Cellar without dropping all your stuff! The blocking wall vanishes after 4 seconds.
X X X X X X X X Use the fountain next to the door: a wall vanishes (which gives you another access to the Cellar), and in comes – another hungry Cave Rat...
X X X X X X X X Now step onto the rope square again and climb down the eastern pit. You see an inscription "Surrender your Possessions". Ignore it. After 4 seconds, the wall to your right vanishes.
X X X X X X X X You find Bones and a Silver Coin there.
X X X X X X X X Go up the ladder and return to the Guilds.

Aim 23 – The Flamebain

Summary
We are going to face Fireball-using enemies soon. So it's time to find the Flamebain for fire protection.
X X X X X X X X Go down the foul smelling stairs to the sewers.
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- Note: you might find a Chewer Pod here from the Chewer killed during Aim 0.
X X X X X X X X Clean the Sewers room from Chewers before climbing down the pit, so that they don't block your way back later.
X X X X X X X X Pick the Flamebain on your way.

M*: What?!? The Flamebain weighs 5,7 kg and I can carry 20 kg?!? Aaaarrrggghhh...
X X X X X X X X Up the stairs and down the next pit...
X X X X X X X X Don't overlook the Bones here.
X X X X X X X X Go up the stairs.
X X X X X X X X At the crossing in the South leave a trash item to keep a wall open. If you don't have a trash item, you can find one in a drainhole nearby.
tbd tbd tbd tbd tbd tbd tbd tbd in a wall in the South of the Chewers room you can see a hole. If you touch it another wall is opened and Trolls come in – so don't touch it... You can't close it again.
X X X X X X X X Return to the Guilds.

Aim 24 – The Food Storage 1 – The Cook

Summary
Now it's time to fetch the components to solve the Priest Guild riddle.

We do only the path to the cook now and defer the two northern rooms for later.
X X X X X X X X Now to the Food Storage. Go to the southwestern corner of the Cellar and then up the stairs to the Food Storage.
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- You can collect food here – surprise, surprise! And also three VEN Eggs.
X X X X X X X X Go through the western door. Two hellhounds and a bag are here. Try to get into their room and behind them. Take the bag afterwards.
X X X X X X X X Go through the western door. It leads to a small passage with two doors.
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- Warning

The northern door leads to a room with 3 Gigglers, 2 Rock Piles and a Zombie. When I came there later, there was additonally a Caterpillar there.

Conclusion 1: in the Cook's room is a Caterpillar generator.
Conclusion 2: Now knowing this I'd recommend doing this room before dealing with the Cook!
X X X X X X X X Go through the western door.
X X X X X X X X You face the Cook and two more Hellhounds. The cook cooks with fireballs, try attacking him from behind. Vou might also let the door help you. After defeating him you get 3 VEN Eggs, a unique Crossbow, Fur Rags and some other stuff.

The Fur Rags increase all attributes except Wisdom by 3. The load is also increased!
X X X X X X X X Return to the Guilds.
X X X X X X X X Place 5 VEN Eggs in the hole in the Priest Guild.
X X X X X X X X Take the Wand in the Alcove.
X X X X X X X X Take the YA BRO Scroll in the bookshelf.
X --- --- X --- --- --- --- Open the fourth door in the Priest Guild.

Aim 25 – The Long Lost Wand
X X X X X X X X Take the wand with you that you found in the Priest Guild!
X X X X X X X X Go to the place, where the path to the Long Lost Wand starts.
X X X X X X X X Follow the path to the Long Lost Wand until you stand before a grate with Boulders and Dust.
X X X X X X X X Use a rope to climb down here (or just jump onto the grate).
X X X X X X X X Take the Iron Key in the hole in the wall to your right.
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- Note: as it looks for the Wand to appear, you have to cleanup both Screamer groups and step onto their squares. Then walk around until the Wand appears. Walking onto the square, where you took the Iron Key, works often – but not always!
X X X X X X X X Fight the Screamers on the West side.
X X X X X X X X Put the wand of the Priest Guild (!) into the alcove in the West. Thus you can keep the Long Lost Wand and the Iron Key!

You can already do this just after the Screamers in the West are defeated, when you have access to the alcove. This gives you an escape if things go bad with the second Screamer group. On the other hand the Screamers seem to move not much...
X X X X X X X X Fight the Screamers on the East side and take four Gorgonzolas.
X X X X X X X X Search the Long Lost Wand. As long as it is on the ground, step onto its square and it gets teleported somewhere else. Finally it is teleported from the northern square into a hole near the stairs. If you take it from there, you earn 5 challenge points.

Note: do not take it from the ground – you don't receive the points in this case! In case you took it accidently from the ground just put it back where you took it. Then step onto that square
X X X X X X X X Return to the Guilds.

Interlude – Lockpicks

Before going to the Fur Trader, we go now to the Treasure Area to gain the Lockpicks from the Giggler of All. This will give us access to our fifth Shuriken.

Aim 26 – The Treasure Area 6 – The Giggler of All

Summary
The Giggler of All has Lockpicks, which can open some doors.
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- Strategy Note
M*: The Chewers do not go through the doorway to the Giggler area too early – but they will sometime. So if you manage to get there, you're safe from them for a while. And the Gigglers do no damage... Of course, on your way back, you have to deal with the Chewers. So take enough food and water with you...
X X X X X X X X Go back to the northern teleport room. Go through the door and to the crossing (more Chewers...). Follow the way to the East until you reach a door.
X X X X X X X X Open the door with the button to its left.
X X X X X X X X Behind the door you'll find the Giggler of All. Defeat it and take its treasure. The Lockpicks can open some doors, though this might take several attempts.
X X X X X X X X Go to the Storage Cellar.

Aim 27 – Storage Cellar 3 – The Winged Key Door

Summary
We're gonna use the Lockpicks for the first time.
X X X X X X X X Lockpick the Winged Key door near to the stairs to the Sewers to find another Shuriken and a Wand. The Lockpicks seem to be rotten: it takes 18 attempts to open the door...
X X X X X X X X Touch the left door frame to open the grate inside.
X X X X X X X X Find a Wand of FUL and a Shuriken.
X X X X X X X X Be careful when taking the Stormring. Equip it immediately...
X X X X X X X X Return to the Guilds.
((X)) X ((X)) X X X X X Open the fifth door in the Ninja Guild.

Aim 28 – The Last Guild Riddle

Summary
It's time to solve the Fighter Guild riddle. For this we have to visit the Fur Trader. Since the Hermit in the Sewers lives near our way, we'll talk to him also. He is kindly enough to lead us to a Vorpal Blade.

The Waraxe is not only needed for the riddle but also a good weapon. The Vorpal Blade is useful for fighting non-material beings, elementals and such stuff.

M*: since the Maleficients still have load problems, we go for the axe first, since this will reduce our weight by 15 Fur Rags...
X X X X X X X X Take at least 15 Fur Rags with you.
--- --- --- --- --- X --- --- M4: take all other Fur Rags for Steaks with you...

Interlude – The Way to the Fur Trader

There are two different ways to the Fur Trader (in fact, there are more – but these are the easy ones!).

1. The "normal" way

a) Lockpick the Winged Key door in the Cellar and go down there.
b) Open the northern wall to the Temple
c) Kill the two Couatls there (ON Fireball should be sufficient)
d) Open the door north of the High Priest and go down
e) Find the way to the Fur Trader
f) Return the same way

2. The "strange" way
I found this one accidently when I thought about trying out the pit at {1,21,14} and from there returning the stairs up to the Temple (after having been at the Fur Trader). Originally, I was planning to leave through the entrance in the West. But during testing I found out the stuff you find below under "Notes" which made me change my mind.

a) Climb down the pit at {1,21,14} (or lockpick the Winged Key door in the Cellar, go down he stairs and climb down the pit at {2,21,14}
b) Find the way to the Fur Trader
c) Return to where you came down in a), go up the stairs there and open the door
d) Kill all four Couatls (e. g. with ON Fireballs)
e) Step onto the square in front of the High Priest (and step back immediately). This opens the exits in the North and South.

Warning: the strange way spawns another Couatl somehwere. Most of my groups encountered one later! Maybe step e) makes the High Priest summon this one?!?

Notes:
1. The Couatls in the Temple are immovable.
2. Opening a wall from outside to theTemple makes the two Couatls there movable.
3. Stepping onto the square in front of the High Priest opens the walls in the North and South and makes all four Couatls movable.
4. Poison Clouds triggered by pressure plates are one-hit-killers for Couatls.

This guide is based on the "strange way".

Aim 28 A – The Fur Trader
X X X X X X X X Go to the Winged Key door in the Cellar (near the Flask quest) and lockpick it. This one needs 10 attempts.

Note: Fireballs work also – but we better keep the Mana.
X X X X X X X X Go down the northern stairs and climb down the pit at the western wall.
X X X X X X X X Turn around, press the switch, leave the room through the door and go to the West and down the stairs to the Mines.
X X X X X X X X Go to the North and use the elevator to the Fur Trader. You get 1 point.
X X X X X X X X Trade 20 Fur Rags for a Waraxe (the trader will go down to a price of 15!).
--- --- --- --- --- X --- --- You can also trade Fur Rags for Steaks here.
X X X X X X X X Return to the Sewers.

Aim 28 B – The Hermit
X X X X X X X X Instead of returning into the small room with the stairs to the Temple, look at the South.
X X X X X X X X If you see Bones you're on your way.
X X X X X X X X I take the Bones.
X X X X X X X X From the Bones go to the South. Look for a button-operated door to your right. Beware of Water Elementals...
X X X X X X X X Open the door and kill the Mud Man for a Monk Staff.
X X X X X X X X Go to the square in front of the Grey Hermit and wait a little...
X X X X X X X X You are leleported to the Haven of Meditation.
X X X X X X X X Use the switch to remove a wall. Go there and find an Open Helm and a Vorpal Blade.
X X X X X X X X Use the teleporter to return to the Grey Hermit.
X X X X X X X X Kill the Black Flames.
X X X X X X X X You can talk to the Hermit now (remove weapon from hand, go forward, talk, go backward, repeat). He has really much to say – but it seems not to be very important. Once you attack him, you can no longer talk to him.

Aim 28 C – The Way Back
X X X X X X X X Go to the northern room, where you came down to the Sewers.
X X X X X X X X Go up the stairs to the Temple and open the door.
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- Reminder: do not step onto the square in front of the High Priest.
X X X X X X X X Kill the northern Couatls.
X X X X X X X X Kill the southern Couatls.
X X X X X X X X Now step onto the square in front of the High Priest (and step north or south immediately). This removes walls in the North and South.
X X X X X X X X Use one of these exits and return to the Guilds.

Aim 28 D – The Guilds – The Last Guild Riddle and Some Doors
X X X X X X X X Use the Waraxe to solve the Fighter Guild riddle. Take it back.
X X X X X X X X Open the fourth door in the Fighter Guild.
X X X X X X X X Take the Bag.
X X --- --- --- --- --- --- Open the fifth door in the Fighter Guild.
X X --- --- --- --- --- --- Kill the Unholy Armour. If you are to weak, you can also lure it outside the Fighter Guild. If you go just east to the Ninja Guild, it follows you. On the second square after leaving the Fighter Guild a teleporter appears and takes it away. You can't follow it. Since I do not know where it is teleported, I would anyway recommend to kill it. At least this is what I do.

You can lure it to the North, where you have two options (besides fighting face to face):
1. South of the foul smelling stairs is a small area of 6 squares where you can try attacking it from behind (my preferred method).
2. Use the "circle" with the door between Maleficient Guild, Wine Cellar stairs and foul smelling stairs. Strike, retreat, strike, retreat, ...
X X --- --- --- --- --- --- Take the Mace of Order afterwards.
It gives you Strength+5 and Load+4 when equipped.
((X)) X X ((X)) X X X X Open the fourth door in the Priest Guild.
X --- --- X --- --- --- --- Open the fifth door in the Priest Guild.
X --- --- X --- --- --- --- After fighting the Munchers here, you find a Flask and 1-4 VEN Eggs. The Flask transforms its first water filling into Auric Water. You get one point for the flask.
X --- --- X --- --- --- --- The fountain here has red eyes.
X --- --- X --- --- --- --- In the alcove you find a Bag with the VI IR NETA Scroll.

Interlude – Going Deeper

Now that we have explored most parts of the first two levels it's time to go deeper into the dungeon.

We have the choice between Temple and Sewers. To say it in other words: either few fireball-casting monks or zillions of trolls.

In my first games I always continued with the temple, but that was before I detected the Blast Spore trick for the Corbum in the Storage Cellar. So formerly, I needed a Corbum (and/or Fury) out of the temple to get the Fireball spell.

Since there are three stairs, where you can get to the Sewers easily from the beginning (the foul smelling one, and the ones in Storage Cellar and Wine Cellar), I think it's intended to continue with the Sewers.

With the Blast Spore Trick, both ways are possible.

We need 3 more Guild items to remove XP restrictions. Corbum and Monk Staff can be gained rather easily with a quick visit in the Temple, for the Mace we have to go to the Sewers – either to the Troll Lair (lots of Trolls...) or climb down to the Dwarven Forge (lots of other monsters).

Since we need the Corbum more urgently (M1 and M4-1 are Wizard Artisans already due to heavy Fireball usage) we do the Temple first – at least the most necessary parts. This will give us Fury also (more Fireballs...). It's just 3 monks...

Most fights can be done in Ninja mode (where we have unlimited XP already) or with Fireballs, so we defer the Mace a little.

Aim 29 – The Temple 1 – The Southern Area

Summary
Get the Corbum from the Masters of the Plasma.
Get Fury and the Eternal Torch from St. Prometheus.
Get the Mirror of Dawn from the Poet Seer.

Good news here: there are no Gigglers and Leprechauns on this level.

You will be working with many Monks. All of them cast fireballs. Aren’t you glad you cast fireballs also? Won’t this be fun?

Original blurb from the game "Paranoia":
You will be working with many Troubleshooters. All of them carry lasers. Aren’t you glad you have a laser? Won’t this be fun?

X X X X X X X X Take the Long Lost Wand with you.
X X X X X X X X Go to the Cellar.
--- --- --- --- --- X --- --- Go to the Rat Lair and look, whether steaks are running around again... Encountered 3 Rats.
X X X X X X X X Go through the Winged Key door and go down the stairs to the right.
--- --- --- --- --- tbd tbd --- Between the two stairs in the temple is a trap for the Maleficients.
M4, M4-1: 2-4 Specters appear. Since they drop nothing entering the square should maybe be avoided. We put it on our to do list for later.
M1: nothing happened (not even the message "Cursed"). Looks like you must have taken the Bone Doll before. Nevertheless I decided to reload and not to enter the square – just in case something strange might happen later...
X X X X X X X X Turn left. The Altar here closes 4 pits in the South (they can be opened again).
X X X X X X X X The next Altar in the South closes 5 pits in the North. There seems to be no further functionality beyond this (but any closed pits are good during fights...).
X X X X X X X X Head on to the South until you reach a wall that says "Followers of Lao Tzu". A torch is also near. Ignore the doors to the West and South for now and go to the East. Be careful and prepared for a fight...

Aim 29 A – The Masters of the Plasma
X X X X X X X X Open the next door to your left and rush in. There are 1 or 2 monks here. I suppose if it's only one he has just fireballed the other since his Gorgonzola was lying around (yes – these are real Masters of the Plasma)... After the fight you find a Corbum, a Scroll, 6 Plasmas and a Sticky Plasma to open the next door...

M* (maybe other groups also...): Calm him with the Long Lost Wand until he walks into the doorway. Then let the door do the work, while further calming him.
tbd tbd tbd tbd tbd tbd tbd tbd We explore the open door later.

Aim 29 B – St. Prometheus
X X X X X X X X Stand in the entrance doorway and look to the East to St. Prometheus. Wait until he vanishes (not sure whether he is killed by the door or his own fireballs). Then sidestep right, rush in St. Prometheus doorway before he respawns. Take Fury in the right side of the door and the Eternal Torch. Thus you can gain them without a fight. If you are too slow, just repeat it.
Sometimes the door is closed and doesn't work. In this case press its button twice, to let it help you. Then either defeat him or retreat and wait until he is dead.

Note:
When he is dead and you stop the door, it sometimes takes 2-3 seonds until he respawns. Time enough to step in before he returns. But more often he respawns immediately.

Note:
I got the impression that he can only be wounded when the door is not moving and open.
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- Note: Fury needs to get re-equipped to be re-charged.
Warning 1: if you don't have 10 Wisdom, equipping Fury costs you 1 Wisdom permanently each time!
Warning 2: you have to be a Wizard Craftsman to see the Fireball option of Fury. If you do Sewers before the Temple that should be sufficient. If you do the Temple first, you might not yet be a Craftsman. And Maleficients might not even 10 Wisdom yet. A good reason doing the Sewers first.

Aim 29 C – The Poet Seer

Summary
The next thing we need is a Mirror of Dawn, which we will receive from the Poet Seer.
X X X X X X X X Go back to the torch. From there go to the West until the second door to the South. An inscription informs you, that the Poet Seer lives here.
X X X X X X X X Go in and make him a head shorter. Even M1 can kill him with two Fireballs from Fury. Take his Mirror of Dawn, the Bag and other stuff.
X X X X X X X X Loot his room. You find a strange Scroll ("HLOR V FANG ANANANAS HLO") and the Clairvoyance spell ("YA EW DAIN").
X X X X X X X X There is a mirror or window named "Vestuary" here. If you use Clairvoyance here, you see a lord (?) and get the message "Voyeur". You get the message even if the spell does not succeed.
X X X X X X X X Return to the Guilds.
((X)) X X X ((X)) X X X Open the fifth door in the Wizard Guild.
X X X X X X X X Fight the Black Flame with the Vorpal Blade.
X X X X X X X X Take the Magic Purse.
X X X X X X X X In the bookshelf you find the Invisibility Scroll and another reminder for the alchemical oven.
X X X X X X X X Go back to the Alchemical Oven and use it the third time.

Third usage: Sar Wine + Zo Liqueur = 2 Zo Liqueurs

Aim 30 – Minotaur's Maze, MIPS Area and Treasure Area Revisited

Summary
Mainly we are here to get the stuff behind the Mirrors – especially the Monk Staff.
Furthermore, we'll solve the MIPS riddle.
X X X X X X X X Take with you the Emerald.
X X X X X X X X Take with you the Mirror of Dawn.
X X X X X X X X Go to the Rat Lair.
--- --- --- --- --- X --- --- Look, whether steaks are running around again... Encountered only 1 Rat this time.
X X X X X X X X Go up the ladder to the Minotaur's Maze.
X X X X X X X X Use the Mirror of Dawn on the mirrors there which results among others in another Monk Staff. There are six mirrors here.
X X X X X X X X Go through the destroyed door to the MIPS area, use the Emerald to open the door to your right and solve the MIPS riddle.
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- The MIPS Riddle – Solution

1. Open the first door with an Emerald.
2. Bash the next one – or cast a Fireball (or use Fury...).
3. Step forward and open the next door with the DES GOR DAIN spell.
4. Throw a rock through the next grate door. You might need several tries. This will close the two pits in this corridor.
5. Leave through the western door, go north and through the next door.
6. In the northern alcove you find the "Mischievous Bag" Scroll and a Turquoise Key.
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- M4: eventually go to the Treasure Area to kill some Chewers for food.
X X X X X X X X Return to the Guilds.
((X)) X X ((X)) X X X X Use the monk staff to open the fifth door in the Priest Guild.

Interlude – The Next Mace

As already mentioned in the last interlude there are two Maces waiting for us.

1. The Mace in the Troll Lair
This one is heavily guarded by lots of Trolls. To make things worse, there might be Gigglers and Leprechauns also here.

2. The Mace in the Dwarven Forge
This one is not much guarded – but the way to it is! Here also Gigglers and Leprechauns can show up – but you an easily deal with them from the distance. And if you can reach a ceratin switch, you can drown most of them.

Conclusion
The Mace in the Dwarven Forge looks easier in my opinion. To get there, I think it's easiest going down the stairs in the southeastern corner of the Temple. So I'll describe this way here.

If you want to try out the Troll Lair, you can either go down the stairs in the Wine Cellar or climb down one of the two pits near the Heresiarch of Uqbar. If you don't succeed with the Trolls you can still cross the River and do the Dwarven Forge.

Aim 31 – The Next Mace

Summary
Go to the southeastern corner of the Temple.
Go down the stairs to the Sewers.
Find a way across the River.
Open the pits to the Dwarven Forge.
Climb down and take the Mace.
X X X X X X X X Take with you the Long Lost Wand.
X X X X X X X X Take with you the Vorpal Blade.
X X X X X X X X Fury might be also helpful for its extra Fireballs...
X X X X X X X X Take with you 2-4 Gorgonzolas or equivalent food – this expedition might take longer...
X X X X X X X X Return to the Temple to the "Followers of Lao Tzu" wall.

Aim 31 A – The Temple – The Heresiarch of Uqbar

Summary
Clean the southeastern area.
Find the stairs to the Sewers.
X X X X X X X X Go down South and open the door to the Heresiarch of Uqbar. Be prepared for more monks...
X X X X X X X X In the first room there are two monks. Kill them and go the East.
X X X X X X X X In an altar you find a scroll about Master Eckhart'2 Talisman.
X X X X X X X X Strange inscription on a wall: "Resonance harmonizes Sound". Not sure what this is good for...
X X X X X X X X You have noticed two doors to the South here. Go through the western one first. One monk here...
X X X X X X X X Inscription "Easy gives rise to difficult".
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- In the South you see a Gold lock. We'll explore this later when we are sure to have enough surplus Gold Keys.
X X X X X X X X Return to the first room and take eastern door to the South. Two monks!
X X X X X X X X After dealing with the monks go to the western room. Another strange inscription "After follows before" and another scroll in an altar.
X X X X X X X X In the eastern room you find another scroll in an altar.
X X X X X X X X In the East you see a stairs down – the "Path of Tao". Go down here.

Aim 31 B – The Sewers – The Way Across the River

Summary
Encounter a Statue.
Find the River.
Cross the River.
X X X X X X X X You see a statue to your left that can be examined. It gives a hint about a Sage whom we met already. Destroy the statue.
X X X X X X X X The wall behind the statue is illusionary and leads to a small area south of the River. Step in. South you can see a Spitter Tree. We care about it later. Turn north and explore the area.
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- The area south of the River seems to be quite safe – but sometimes Leprechauns might get lost here. A fountain is also here. You might find Snapdragons and Skullseeds here.
X X X X X X X X Collect Snapdragons and Skullseeds.
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- In the North are two grates. Behind the left one stands another Spitter Tree. I let it live for now, since otherwise Water Elementals might occupy the square, which is more awesome.
X X X X X X X X The wall behind the eastern grate is illusionary and leads to a hidden stairs down. I put this stairs on my "later exploration list".
X X X X X X X X Equip the Long Lost Wand.
X X X X X X X X If the square east of the Spitter Tree is occupied by a Water Elemental use the Long Lost Wand to calm it back into the River.
X X X X X X X X Pass the Spitter Tree and step into the River. Do nothing and see, where it brings you.

Aim 31 C – The Sewers – Beyond the River to the North

Summary
We are going to find our way to the Dwarven Forges to get another Mace and – even more important – an Axe.
This one is very tricky, but if you know how to do it, it's rather easy...
X X X X X X X X From where you strand go one step east (use the Long Lost Wand if a Water Elemental is there). Looking to the South here, you can see a stairs going down. Explore it later. Continue one step north and one step east again.
X X X X X X X X In the North you see lots of monsters. Kill most of them.
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- Strategy Hint
Keep this square in mind. You seem to be safe here!!! I could even sleep here without being attacked.

North of you are zillions of Leeches, Gigglers, Leprechauns, Chewers and Spitter Trees. Do not try to fight your way through too early with weak champions. From where you are you can take them one by one just going forward and backward as necessary. Save your fireballs to kill Gigglers and Leprechauns from the distance. Gigglers can drop lots of Snapdragons and also some special items.
--- --- --- X --- --- --- --- Giggler drop received: GOR Coin
--- --- --- X --- --- --- --- Giggler drop received: Gold Key
X X X X X X X X When no further enemies appear or they are getting significantly less, find your way North to the Spitter Tree.
X X X X X X X X Kill the Spitter Tree. Collect its Spitter Berries.
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- Note:
Now things are getting quite obscure...
There is a switch at the wall behind the Spitter Tree. This is the switch the statues at the beginning tell you about (we have yet to talk to them)!
Initially the three pits to the Dwarven Fortress are closed. Pressing this switch the first time floods the area, but keeps the pits closed. Pressing this switch the second time stops the flooding and the pits open so the water can drain off. Pressing the switch the third time closes the pits again and starts flooding, and so on...
X X X X X X X X So I do the following:
1. Press the button once and start flooding.
2. Wait about a minute to drown most of the enemies.
3. Press the button again – the pits are open now.
X X X X X X X X Now run to the North until you see the second pit to your right (we examine the side passages later). If you encounter enemies in between kill or ignore them as you wish (but keep in mind that Gigglers here might carry Gold or Emerald Keys...).

Aim 31 D – The Mines – The Dwarven Forges

This part of the Mines can only be accessed through a pit from the Sewers. So we do it now to get the badly needed Waraxe.
X X X X X X X X Be prepared to use the Long Lost Wand. Eventually cast some FUL spells, then climb down the pit.
X X X X X X X X For entering the Dwarven Forges you get a Challenge point.
X X X X X X X X If you are surrounded by enemies calm the Ruster away. Step forward immediately. Fight the Ruster first. Sometimes a Will o Wisp is also there. The Ruster has a Sapphire.
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- Notes:
The doors can be opened by touching the statues next to them. They cannot be closed again.
The pits can be closed and opened with switches next to them (the flames will fall down then).
X X X X X X X X Kill the Flames (it's easy eben for the Maleficients). If you don't have the Vorpal Blade with you, you can also ignore them and just take the damage when using the forge.
X X X X X X X X In the alcove between the Flames you find the Scroll "The mightiest weapon of all" and a Mace.
X X X X X X X X Check your equipment for broken items.
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- Important Place
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- In the alcove you can repair broken items! Just place an item in the empty (!) alcove.
X X X X X X X X In the other alcove you find the map password for the Mines.
X X X X X X X X In a hole in the western wall you find another Scroll.
X X X X X X X X Open the western door.
X X X X X X X X Go west, then 3 steps south, then through a doorway to the West again.
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- Note
On your way you might encounter monsters. You can fight them, circumvent them or calm them. If you fight them, check their drops carefully! I normally circumvent or calm them now.
--- --- --- --- --- X --- --- Encountered 2 Alpha Worms who dropped a Solid Key.
X X X X X X X X Take the next passage to the South. To your left, you'll pass the Fur Trader Elevator.
X X X X X X X X From here you should know the way back to the Guilds. Return there.
((X)) ((X)) X X X X X X Open the fifth door in the Fighter Guild.
((X)) ((X)) X X X X X X Kill the Unholy Armour. See Aim 28 D above, if you need help.
((X)) ((X)) X X X X X X Take the Mace of Order afterwards.
It gives you Strength+5 and Load+4 when equipped.

Interlude – No More Guild Restrictions!

Each group has opened 5 doors of each Guild now, so no more guild restrictions for gaining XP apply.

Since I don't worry too much about the 6th Guild items for unlocking the Guild leaders, I'll continue from now on "just straight forward". I'm anyway planning to do as much as possible with 1 Champion and unlock the Guild leaders only when all other quests have been finished.

So, this is the plan:

1. Level 0: explore the Food Storage
2. Level 1: kill the Chewer Trees in the Cellar (Maleficients only)
3. Level 3 (I do Sewers before Temple): explore the Sewers
4. Level 2: explore the Temple
5. Level 4: explore the Mines
